Three Years at AI Tinkerers. Three Presentations. One Pattern.

I've been showing up to AI Tinkerers for three years.

I started going before I had anything worth demoing. I kept going after I did.

The difference between those two states taught me more than the presentations.

AI Tinkerers is a monthly meetup for people building with AI. Engineers, researchers, solo founders. Everyone is making something: tools, wrappers, agents, automation layers nobody has named yet.

Three years of watching what happens in that room taught me one thing, over and over:

The thing you're embarrassed to show is usually the thing worth showing.

Not the polished demos. Those are fine. You watch, you nod, you move on. The demo where someone says "I'm not sure this is even the right approach." That's where the room comes alive. Because that's the actual unsolved problem.

I've presented three times. Each time I nearly cut what I was going to show because it didn't feel finished. Each time, the questions that came back told me I was wrong about what "finished" means.

The December 2025 AI Tinkerers Holiday Science Fair was the clearest version of this. Tools I'd spent 12+ months building, none of them launched yet. I showed them anyway. The feedback wasn't about polish. It was about whether the approach was right.

That's a question I can't answer by myself.

In the post that started this series, the second post covered the framework I built during those 12 months, I wrote about the part of building solo that doesn't show up in commit logs: losing the person who tells you the plane is on fire before you fly it into a mountain. I said finding that second voice "is the puzzle I'm still solving."

AI Tinkerers is part of the answer. One monthly room full of people who have no stake in your outcome and every reason to be honest.

It asks one thing in return: show the half-built thing.
